Complete. Theatre programme. A VERY RARE copy of the programme for one of the most historic performances of Othello. In 1986, Janet Suzman cast a black man, John Kani, as Othello - the first time in South African history this happened. It became a succes de scandale when the apartheid government's censors passed the performance. The moment of Othello's kiss with Desdemona became a moment of immense controversy and poignancy as at the time the ban on sexual relations between the races had only very recently been lifted. It was still an improbability to see a black and white person embrace, let alone kiss. The performance launched against the taboo came to be the beginning of the taboo's demolition. Nonetheless, white audiences were either thrilled, scandalised, enthused or moved. The production has never been forgotten. This copy is one of very few extant. The covers have a very, very light strip of tanning from storage. There is even lighter wear about the edges. The contents are in excellent condition. They are tidy, clean, clear, bold, proud, smart. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
