Porter came to the Cape from Ireland Porter bringing what he called "an unspeakable hatred of oppression of every kind", and set about promoting equal rights and justice for all, regardless of race or class. In the years after the period of these speeches, his influence was profound on senior politicians such as Saul Solomon, John Molteno and John Fairbairn. Boards have blind stamped decoration. They have wear about all edges, corners and seams. The spine has pressed gilt decoration, borders and titling. The spine has wear to head and foot. The boards have some scuffing and marking. They are assured. Within, the guttering along the front page is cracked, but the security of the book is unaffected. The front page is marked from rubbing, handling. A previous owner stamps appear on the front pages. The contents are most pleasing considering the age and the enjoyment this book has given.
