Four volumes. A benign set. All four have navy blue boards that are worn, scuffed, marked all about from use, handling, shelving and age. They are steady and sure. Volume I: 'From the Earliest Times to the Year 1820'. Please note that the illustration at page 126 is missing. Notably the front pastedown has an ex-libris plate for Thomas Lynedoch Graham (the grandson of John Graham, after whom Grahamstown was named), who was in the first post Anglo-Boer war government as Colonial Secretary. He also stood in for the Cape Prime Minister when he was away at the coronation of Edward VII. Graham also signed the frontispage (dated: 21/5/10). A mild-mannered copy. The early pages are foxed. The contents are lightly smeared, splashed with foxing throughout. Volume II: 'From 1820 to 1834'. Published 1913. The paper trims have storage marks, flecks of foxing. The contents have splatters, rashes of foxing throughout. The pages are placid, thick, certain. Volume III: 1834-1838. Published 1919. The frontispage is signed Jan de Klerk PUK (who may well be the father of South Africa's last State President, FW de Klerk). The papertrims have age and storage marks. The contents have flushes, blushes, smear of foxing. In general, they are clear, confident, certain. Volume IV: 1838-1846. Published 1926. Please note that by the time this volume was published, the expected extent of the series had expanded to six volumes. The pagetrims have some light shelving tanning. The first and last pages have some rashes of foxing. The pages are very clean, clear, convivial, certain, healthy.
