316 pages (complete). An avidly owned copy. Included: various press-cuttings: - on the Debate in Imperial Parliament on SA War Report; Army Supply Contracts in South following Sir W Butler's Report; Extracts from the minutes of evidence of Sir W Butler's report; a cutting from the 'Times' on the Report of the War Stores Commission; the 'Times' on Decision and action taken by the War Office on Report. Bound by the previous owner (JHR de Smidt - son of the artist and Surveyor-General of the Cape Colony, Abraham de Smidt). De Smidt signed both boards and frontis page, stamped the front paste down all of which safely declared his ownership. The boards are grubby with much wear, scuffing, marking from handling and shelving and age. The cloth spine has wear. The boards are sure. The guttering along the first pages is cracked and the pages are loosened. The contents have much evidence of use and attention. There are attentive annotations - in pencil - here and there. Despite these distractions, the pages are clear, orderly, certain, authoritative, only very lightly worn about the edges from handling, comfortable, more than competent. fk
