this 29 page document published in 1861 is bound beautifully in recent full red leather with new end pages. there are no inscriptions but there is light foxing. Port Elizabeth Bank was the first bank established in Port Elizabeth (pre-dating The Standard Bank). it only opened for business in 1847 due to the War of the Axe. the first directors were : William Fleming, William Smith, Daniel Phillips, John Owen Smith and Joshua Williamson Kemp. William Fleming was the chairman. William Fleming was born in 1797 and died in 1861. he was an important personality in Port Elizabeth at the time. Fleming Street in Port Elizabeth is named after him. an extremely rare document in the original and a very important and unusual piece of P.E. History.
