inscribed thus " to general Carter? from the Author. Maritzburg Jan 12 1908" there are no other inscriptions but there is a previous owner's stamp mark. there is foxing and the pages edges have browned. the original blue boards are worn and the back is severely marked. the spine has gold gilt and is also marked.the binding has been repaired and is strong. there are age related marks and tears. the book could well be described as poor but due to its age i have classified it as fair.. Inscribed from Charlotte Moore to Sir Matthew Nathan, Governor of Natal from 1907-1909 (who was more successful as an imperial administrator than at home - he was Under-Secretary for Ireland at the time of the Easter Uprising and was persuaded to resign due to his handling of the situation), on the frontispage. Moore dated the inscription, "Maritzburg, Natal. 1907. Sept. 9th."
