Port Elizabeth Bank was the first bank established in Port Elizabeth (pre-dating The Standard Bank). it only opened for business in 1847 due to the War of the Axe. the first directors were : William Fleming, William Smith, Daniel Phillips, John Owen Smith and Joshua Williamson Kemp.
